Shopping for a half-ton pickup usually comes down to one question: what will it pull? The 2027 Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra each answer it differently, with engines from turbo V6s and hybrids to big V8s and a diesel.
This guide keeps things simple. It explains what each engine is good at, which truck tows the most and where each one stands out. The full numbers sit in the tables, so you can check the details at a glance.
Horsepower, Torque and Tow Ratings, Explained
Horsepower tells you how much work an engine can do at full effort. Torque is the pulling muscle you feel when you leave a stop with a trailer hooked up. More torque makes heavy loads feel easier to get moving.
A tow rating is the most a properly equipped truck can pull. The cab, box, drive and towing package all play a part, so two trucks with the same engine can carry different ratings. Always check the rating for the exact truck you are looking at.

Ford F-150: Four Engines, Four Clear Roles

The F-150 gives you four core engines, and each one has a clear job. The new 3.0L EcoBoost V6 is the starting point. It handles lighter trailers and tows up to 8,400 lbs (3,810 kg).
For heavy towing, the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 is the one to pick. Set up with the right towing package, it pulls up to 13,500 lbs (6,123 kg). The 5.0L V8 sits just below it and suits buyers who prefer a V8.
The PowerBoost hybrid brings the most pulling muscle in the F-150 lineup, with 570 lb-ft of torque, and still tows up to 12,400 lbs (5,625 kg). The F-150 also offers BlueCruise with Towing, which lets Ford’s driver-assist system work with trailers up to 10,000 lbs (4,536 kg).
Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500: Two Trucks, One Engine Family

The new Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 share the same four engines. Their tow ratings differ slightly, so the table lists both trucks wherever the numbers split.
The 5.7L V8 is the towing champion of this whole comparison. In the Silverado, it pulls up to 13,700 lbs (6,214 kg), the highest rating here. The Sierra version sits close behind at 13,500 lbs (6,123 kg).
The bigger 6.6L V8 is the power pick. It makes more horsepower than the 5.7L but carries a lower tow rating, so drivers who pull heavy trailers should stick with the 5.7L.
These are also the only trucks in this group with a diesel. The Duramax 3.0L tows up to 12,100 lbs (5,488 kg) in the Sierra. The 2.7L TurboMax is the base engine and pulls up to 9,400 lbs (4,264 kg) in both trucks.
Ram 1500: Standard 4x4 and Inline-Six Power

Every 2027 Ram 1500 in Canada comes with standard 4x4. Its core lineup also features a twin-turbo inline-six called the Hurricane, offered in two versions.
The Hurricane SO is Ram’s best towing engine, rated up to 11,530 lbs (5,230 kg). The 5.7L HEMI V8 eTorque comes in just below it for buyers who want a V8 under the hood.
The Hurricane HO makes 540 hp, the most horsepower of any core engine in this comparison. It tows less than the SO, so it suits drivers who care more about quick acceleration than heavy trailers. The 3.6L Pentastar V6 eTorque covers lighter towing jobs.
Toyota Tundra: Twin-Turbo V6, With or Without a Hybrid Boost

Every Tundra uses a 3.4L twin-turbo V6 paired with a 10-speed automatic. You choose between the regular i-FORCE engine and the i-FORCE MAX, which adds an electric motor for extra pulling power.
The i-FORCE engine is the Tundra’s towing pick, rated up to 11,993 lbs (5,440 kg) as a 4x4. SR grades use a milder tune of the same engine, which suits lighter work.
The i-FORCE MAX hybrid makes 583 lb-ft of torque, the most of any core engine in this comparison. It tows up to 11,171 lbs (5,067 kg) and offers an available 2.4 kW inverter to power tools and gear right from the truck.
Performance Trucks Put Speed First
The F-150 and Ram 1500 also offer high-performance models with huge horsepower. These trucks are tuned for speed and excitement, and they tow less than the regular engines, topping out at 8,890 lbs (4,032 kg). If towing is your priority, stick with a core engine.

Which 2027 Pickup Engine Fits Your Job?
Each truck leads in a different area. Start with the trailer you pull most often, then use this shortlist:
- You pull the heaviest trailers: Silverado 1500 with the 5.7L V8, with the F-150 3.5L EcoBoost and the Sierra 1500 5.7L V8 right behind it.
- You want a diesel: Silverado 1500 or Sierra 1500 with the Duramax 3.0L.
- You want a hybrid that pulls hard: Tundra i-FORCE MAX for the most torque, or the F-150 3.5L PowerBoost for the higher tow rating.
- You want the most power from a regular pickup: Ram 1500 with the Hurricane HO.
- You want 4x4 on every truck in the lineup: Ram 1500, paired with the Hurricane SO for towing.
