If you're shopping for an electric vehicle in Ontario, the federal Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP) is the rebate program to know. In effect as of February 16, 2026, the EVAP delivers real savings at the point of sale — applied directly by the dealership so there's nothing to claim or file after the fact.
Understanding EVAP takes about five minutes, but those five minutes can save you up to $5,000 on a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) or up to $2,500 on a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The catch — and it's an important one — is that being on the eligible list doesn't automatically mean you'll receive the rebate. There's a $50,000 final-transaction-value cap that can disqualify a vehicle if you add enough options and accessories. Here's what you need to know before you shop.
What Is the Federal EVAP?
The Electric Vehicle Affordability Program replaced the previous federal iZEV incentive. It provides point-of-sale rebates applied directly at the dealership, so you don't have to wait for a tax refund.
- Up to $5,000 off an eligible battery-electric vehicle (BEV)
- Up to $2,500 off an eligible plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV)
- Applied at the time of purchase — no rebate application required after the fact
The $50,000 Cap: What It Means in Practice

Most EVAP-eligible vehicles are subject to a final-transaction-value cap of $50,000. That figure is based on the total purchase price including options, accessories, and dealer-installed upgrades — not just the base MSRP.
This matters because a vehicle that looks eligible at the base trim level can easily exceed the cap once you select a higher trim or add packages. If the final transaction value is over $50,000, you lose the rebate entirely — not a partial reduction, the full amount.
Practical takeaway: Always confirm eligibility with your dealer based on the exact trim and options you're selecting, not just the base price.
BEVs Eligible for Up to $5,000
The following battery-electric vehicles qualify for the $5,000 EVAP rebate. Note that eligibility is trim-specific — not all trims of a given model qualify.

Two Vehicles With No Price Cap — Built in Ontario

Two vehicles on the EVAP list are exempt from the $50,000 final-transaction-value cap entirely. Both happen to be assembled right here in Ontario:
- Dodge Charger Daytona EV — assembled in Brampton, ON
- Chrysler Pacifica PHEV — assembled in Windsor, ON
Because these vehicles are Canadian-made, buyers can select any trim or package and still receive the full rebate, regardless of how high the transaction value climbs. For shoppers who want the most flexibility — or who tend to load up on options — these two models offer a distinct advantage.
Key Things to Double-Check Before You Buy
- Confirm your exact trim is on the list. Eligibility is trim-specific. The 2026 Toyota bZ, for example, only qualifies in XLE FWD — not all variants. The 2026 Kia Sorento PHEV is eligible at LX only. Always verify before finalizing your configuration.
- Watch your final transaction value. The cap is based on what you actually pay, not the starting MSRP. Adding the top package to a borderline-priced vehicle can disqualify you.
- The rebate is applied at the dealership. You don't need to submit a claim after your purchase. The dealer applies the rebate at point of sale, provided the vehicle and transaction qualify.
